Once Again to the Issue of the Duration of the Battle of Borodino

Voennyi Sbornik. 2024. 12(1): 4-14.
DOI: 10.13187/vs.2024.1.4CrossRef

Abstract:
The object of the study is the Battle of Borodino, the subject of the study is the existing assumptions about its duration. The article discusses the features of the battle at Borodino in relation to the time parameters. It is concluded that it is correct to consider that the battle was not a one-day one, in it is necessary to take into account, as the first day, the battle for the Shevardinsky redoubt. It was this battle that provided Napoleon with the choice of the best position for the offensive, and the Russian troops were forced to defend themselves in less advantageous positions. However, the shortcomings of the existing position were compensated for by the resilience of the defending troops and the skillful maneuver of troops and artillery. It is proposed to include in the total time of the battle the maneuver for the withdrawal of Russian troops, which is also part of the hostilities. In any case, although the outcome of several days of battle can be assessed by historians differently, its influence on the result of the campaign as a whole is obvious.

“Maceo”, “Céspedes”, “Agramonte” – ex Spanish Gunboats in the Cuban Fleet

Voennyi Sbornik. 2024. 12(1): 15-28.
DOI: 10.13187/vs.2024.1.15CrossRef

Abstract:
The history of the ships of the Spanish fleet remaining in Cuba after 1898 is currently under development. The works of Spanish historians practically do not raise this topic, limiting their descriptions of biographies to the date of exclusion of ships from the lists of the fleet. The works of Cuban historians are extremely superficial. In this regard, the task of this work was to reconstruct the biographies of three former Spanish gunboats that found themselves under the Cuban flag: “Maceo”, “Céspedes” and “Agramonte”. The main source was the newspaper “Diario de la Marina”, the official periodical of the Havana naval base, published from 1844 to 1960. The newspaper's reports make it possible to clarify and explain a number of facts from the service of these ships. According to Jane's guide-book, “Céspedes” and “Agramonte” were in service until the mid-1920s, while “Maceo” was in service until the mid-1930s. As is clear from the “Diario de Marina”, this was due to the major overhaul of the “Maceo” in the summer of 1911, during which the ship received a new hull. The paradox of the presence of “Céspedes” in Jane's lists, despite its death during a hurricane in October 1910, is due to the fact that it was subsequently repaired and recommissioned. Finally, the information of M. Gálvez Aguilera that the ships in the Cuban fleet were named “Antonio Maceo” and “Ignacio Agramonte” should be classified as unreliable. Throughout their service life, these vessels are referred to exclusively as “Maceo" and "Agramonte”. In turn, the “Ignacio Agramonte” (Havana port tug) and “Antonio Maceo” (merchant ship) are completely different vessels that have nothing in common with the former Spanish gunboats.

Women in the Rhodesian Security Forces during the Bush War (1965–1979)

Voennyi Sbornik. 2024. 12(1): 33-48.
DOI: 10.13187/vs.2024.1.33CrossRef

Abstract:
This article is devoted to the study of the history of women's service in the police and armed forces of Rhodesia (Rhodesian Security Forces). The research materials are based on the memories of direct participants in the events, as well as other information, mainly provided by veteran online associations of the Rhodesian army and police. The structure of the article contains three main sections (“Rhodesian police women before 1965”, “Rhodesian police women after 1965”, “Rhodesian military women in 1975–1979”). The author has studied the history of the development of women's service in law enforcement agencies from temporary auxiliary police units during the Second World War to the possibility of full-time service in the armed forces during the bush war. The work is also accompanied by a large body of photographic material showing the process of women's service in the Rhodesian Security Forces. In conclusion, the author notes that the first full-fledged experience of women in the security forces was gained during the Second World War, which was then developed in the interwar period, and with the declaration of independence of Rhodesia in 1965 and the beginning of a protracted war with the rebels, the need for female personnel only intensified.
