Tradition “Knife Finnish Type” in the Development of National Combat Knife

Voennyi Sbornik. 2025. 13(2): 57-67.

Abstract:
The object of the study is the development of a combat knife as an item of military equipment. The subject of the study is the influence of combat conditions and technological development on the concept of the main combat knife. In modern combat, long-range weapons play a leading role, yet the necessity of a combat knife remains in many respects. Modern knives are used as utility knives, survival tools, and as combat weapons for special situations, “last resort” knives, or silent close-combat weapons. This article examines the evolution of the combat knife from its inception to the present day. Based on an analysis of historical experience, it concludes that it is necessary to categorize knives by purpose and that a transition from the current "three knives" concept to the use of only two types of this weapon is possible.

The “Ferré” Submarine Incident, October 15, 1915

Voennyi Sbornik. 2025. 13(2): 68-74.

Abstract:
In 1911, the Ferré and Palacios submarines were commissioned into the Peruvian Navy for the first time in South America. They belonged to the French Labeuf class. Despite the abundance of literature on these submarines, their service was largely routine. They became training grounds for future Peruvian submariners, and years later, they contributed to the creation of the Diving School, where many Latin American sailors were trained. The most serious incident involving this type of submarine occurred on October 15, 1915, when the Ferré collided with the German freighter Omega while submerged on a training mission. Contemporary periodicals remain virtually the only source for this incident. The author introduces the memoirs of submarine engineer David Maurer von Hagen, given to the newspaper El Comercio in 1971, into scholarly circulation. A number of interesting details of the incident are reported.

Republican Torpedo Boat Operations in 1938 according to the Combat Diary

Voennyi Sbornik. 2025. 13(2): 75-79.

Abstract:
This paper publishes entries from the Combat Diary of the Republican Navy for 1938, pertaining to the activities of Spanish torpedo boats, from the collections of the Russian State Naval Archives (Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation). It is shown that despite the fragmentary and incomplete nature of the information in the diary, this source provides several interesting clarifications on Republican torpedo boat operations in 1938. For example, technical problems in the summer of 1938 were likely more serious than previously assumed. The previously unclear operation of November 5, 1938, was probably intended to divert attention from the passage of military transport. Furthermore, this is the only source that mentions the planning of the raid on Motril in December 1938.

The research methodology is represented by both general scientific and special historical research methods. The article is divided into three main thematic sections (“General characteristics of the combat operations of the 21st NKVD Rifle Division from June to September 1941”, “Formation of the 6th Rifle Regiment of the Division in September 1941 and its further functioning until March 1942” and “Some data and general results on the activities of the 21st NKVD Rifle Division during the 7 months of the defense of Leningrad”), each of which analyzes individual aspects of the 21st NKVD Rifle Division and its 6th Rifle Regiment. In conclusion, the author notes the characteristics of the combat path of both the 21st Rifle Division of the NKVD troops and its 6th Rifle Regiment.

Little Workers of Big Reparations

Voennyi Sbornik. 2025. 13(2): 92-98.

Abstract:
During the Great Patriotic War, Soviet river transport suffered enormous losses. Therefore, during the post-war economic recovery, with all shipbuilding facilities overwhelmed by urgent orders, the only viable alternative was the use of reparation vessels. German boats played a positive role during the most difficult post-war years – a period of economic recovery, marked by widespread shortages of materials, equipment, and skilled labor. The use of reparation boats gave the Soviet shipbuilding industry time to develop new boat designs and begin their mass production.
